Children with learning difficulties will need special help by way of special / remedial education in any one or more of the following areas:

ACADEMIC: Reading, Spelling, Arithmetic/ Math, Writing, Handwriting, Composition

NON-ACADEMIC: Fine Motor, Visual-Motor, Gross Motor, Phonological Processing, Language, Memory ,Visual / Auditory Discrimination – Visual / Auditory

 What is not learning disability?

  • low intelligence/an intellectual disabil-ity

  • mental illness/emotional disturbance

  • autism

  • visual or auditory acuity problems

  • laziness/lack of motivation

  • a way to avoid other issues

  • a physical handicap

  • the result of a poor academic back-ground

Tutoring students with learning disabilities - The Best Approach

  • Visual learners need to see things writ-ten down or in graph form.

  • Auditory learners prefer to listen to new information rather than read it.

  • Kinesthetics /tactile learners learn by doing or experimenting.

REMEDIAL METHODOLOGIES Multi-sensory Approach (VAKT)

(The Orton– Gillingham Approach)

V – Visual

A -Auditory

K -kinesthetic

T -Tactile

What is taught?

  • Phonemic awareness is the first step

  • Phonemic / grapheme correspondence

  • The six types of syllables

  • Probabilities and rules

How it is taught?

Simultaneous multi-sensory instruction

  • Visual drill (see the letter)

  • Auditory drill (say its name)

  • Kinesthetics / tactile drill (write in the air)

Intense instruction with ample practice

  • Dyslexic students need much more practice than for regular readers

  • Direct ,Explicit Instruction

  • Teach one rule at a time

  • Practice it until it is stable in both reading and spelling before introducing a new rule.

Systematic and cumulative

  • Must continue to wave previously learned rules into current lessons to keep them fresh and solid.

  • Synthetic and analytic

  • How to the individual letters or sounds put together to form a word (synthetic).

  • How to look at a long word and break it into smaller pieces (analytic).

Diagnostic Teaching: The teacher must continuously assess their students understanding and ability to apply the rules.
